Those who sow their tears as seeds will reap a harvest with joyful shouts of glee. Psalm 126
I used to say, “I’ve cried enough dreamer’s tears in my life to float a battleship.”
I did not think of tears as something good.
I looked at my tears as shameful weakness. Something to do in private, hidden away from prying and judgmental eyes.
Weakness, and what my father referred to as “emotionalism,” was to be avoided at all cost.
And I tried.
Well I remember the stern looks my father would give me, when I “blew it,” and dissolved into a mass of messy tears—yet one more time.
It has taken a lifetime…
Because of my upbringing, for me to see my weeping and my tears, as something that God has “blessed” me with.
And they are His blessing.
I wrote a poem once about my tears. I wrote it in self-defense, because the folks I was walking with at the time, definitely saw my tears as a weakness…
A very disqualifying weakness!
The “Walking Wounded” need not apply.
I hate that term—Walking Wounded. It is always applied to “the disqualified” who should be shunned or rejected. (Truth be known, we all have qualified for that label at some time in our lives.)
Isn’t it great that Jesus is attracted to the broken?
Check it out sometime. The wrecked and wounded ones, were the very ones Jesus was most often drawn to. The woman at the well, Peter, The woman with the issue of blood, Peter, lepers, prostitutes, and drunks, Peter…
And yes, the “churchy folks” of His day (better known as The Pharisees) bitterly accused Him of hanging out with worthless riffraff.
And He did—He went to a cross so He could choose us!
Riff-raff dreamers one and all!
I don’t know why Jesus has such a tender spot in His heart for the Riffraff of this world, but thank goodness He does! Or, where would any of us be?
Compared to Him and the beauty of His holiness—we are ALL disqualified riffraff!
(Read Romans 1 if you have the slightest doubts.)
Therefore, the next time someone lays a label on you like, “walking wounded,” please remember this:
- God loves you—just the way you are.
- Your tears deeply touch His heart.
- He saves every one of them.
(It’s in the book! Look it up if you don’t believe me.)
One final thought on tears:
Because tears are so often misunderstood, I want to say this to all of you who weep easily:
- Your tears and tenderheartedness are a BLESSING to the church.
- We desperately need you and your tender heart!
- This world is a mean nasty place these days—and it’s getting more difficult every single day. (I have a hard time making it through the Evening News most nights!)
- And social media? Forget about it! (Lots of mean junk yard dogs out there.)
So, for all you tenderhearted “softies”—I tenderly dedicate this poem:
Dreamer
Once, a Pilgrim, here below
Said, No longer do I know…
What will make a heart to sing
And overflow with glad tidings.
So, Abba… You who dwells above;
Author of Eternal Love;
Plant a seed within my heart
And from it, may a new dream start,
I ask from You, this precious gift,
To others heal, and spirit’s lift.
If caterpillar You can use…
(A worm nobody else would choose)
Then, here am I, O great, I AM.
Design for me an awesome plan!
Paint my rainbows! Give me wings!
Call forth, from me, miraculous things!
You said my mountain You would move,
If I would follow Your reprove:
I speak by faith—to Heaven plead;
You said, …a seed is all you need.
So, I surrender for my part;
This sacrifice—my dreamer’s heart…
And from it, may Your river flow
Of Living Water here below,
To nourish, other dreamers, so…
By faith, their dreams, may bloom and grow!
With the faith of a little seed, nothing is impossible.
May your “seeds” of tears bring you great harvests of JOY!
Psalm 126
It was like a dream come true
when you freed us from our bondage and brought us back to Zion!
We laughed and laughed and overflowed with gladness.
We were left shouting for joy and singing your praise.
All the nations saw it and joined in, saying,
“The Lord has done great miracles for them!”
Yes, he did mighty miracles and we are overjoyed!
Now, Lord, do it again! Restore us to our former glory!
May streams of your refreshing flow over us
until our dry hearts are drenched again.
Those who sow their tears as seeds
will reap a harvest with joyful shouts of glee.
They may weep as they go out carrying their seed to sow,
but they will return with joyful laughter and shouting with gladness
as they bring back armloads of blessing and a harvest overflowing!
