I don’t believe there is anything in this world more counterfeited than love. So where would you go to find “everlasting” love? Is there even such a possibility?
What is real love anyway?
What does it look like?
And, is there a love that will outlast everything this chaotic world can dish out?
We are all searching–but how many of us are finding?
The real stuff
Actually the Bible has a clearly defined picture of what REAL love looks like. You can find it in the Thirteenth Chapter of First Corinthians where the Apostle Paul wrote:
If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end. [vs. 3-7 Msg.]
Wow! So who doesn’t want to be loved like this? I think it’s what our hearts secretly long for–LOVE that OUTLASTS anything and everything!
Our hurting hungry hearts
Do you know anyone who can provide this real-love 24-7?
I don’t!
Human love may try it’s best to outlast the hurts, disappointments, and frustrations of this world, but it cannot be there every moment, of every day, and be ALL that you need all of the time.
If you’ve tried to pull that one off?
Then you know how often you have failed.
But in the Bible God says,
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. Jeremiah 31: 3 KJV
The Message Bible says it like this, “God told them, “I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!”
Human love vs. Everlasting Love
Our hearts were created with “a God space” that only God’s everlasting love can fill.
We can try to fill it with human love–but that just can’t last.
We can try to fill it with all the shiny stuff in this world, but that will only create more empty space tumbling around and around on the inside.
We can try to medicate our broken heart or drown out all our empty with booze or drugs, but that will only create more and more darkness…
Or, maybe we just keep searching…
Looking for a love that we pray will outlast our confusion, and pain, and fill us up with hope and Light–Unhindered Love, that God only knows is–Everlasting.
